Directly under the Holy See, Aid to the Church in Need is a registered charity dedicated to the support of the suffering and persecuted Church throughout the world. Founded in 1947 by Fr Werenfried van Straaten, whom Pope John Paul II named “An Outstanding Apostle of Charity”, the organisation is now at work in over 140 countries. The charity undertakes thousands of projects every year including provision of transport for clergy and lay Church workers, construction of church buildings, funding for priests and nuns in their mission and in their formation. Additionally the papal charity also hosts a substantial media apostolate. For example since 1979 more than more than 50 million Aid to the Church in Need Child’s Bibles in over 170 languages have been distributed worldwide.
