“Human persons are ‘called to full and mature spontaneity in their relationships’, a maturity that ‘is the gradual fruit of discernment of the impulses of one’s own heart” (AL, 151). “Every human person ‘must learn, with perseverance and consistency, the meaning of his or her body’” (AL, 151). Rocco Buttiglione, John Paul II Professor of Philosphy and History of European Institutions, Pontifical Lateran University, Rome, Italy, reflects on the richness of Saint Paul II theology of the body as a dynamic resource for families.

Biography

Rocco Buttiglione, John Paul II Professor of Philosophy and History of European Institutions, Pontifical Lateran University, Rome, Italy. 

Rocco Buttiglione was born in Gallipoli, Italy, and studied law in Turin and Rome. He was a disciple and friend of Fr. Luigi Giussani, founder of Liberation and Communion. He taught Philosophy of Politics at the University of Teramo, was Vice Rector of the International Academy of Philosophy in Liechtenstein and Consultant of the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace. He was also Minister for European affairs and Minister for culture in the Italian Government. He has written The thought of the Man who became John Paul II and El hombre y la familia. He received an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Lublin. He is now director of the John Paul II Chair at the Pontifical University of the Lateran in Rome and a fellow of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. He is married to Maria Pia and has four daughters and twelve grandchildren.
