“It is one thing to be understanding of human weakness and the complexities of life, and another to accept ideologies that attempt to sunder what are inseparable aspects of reality” (AL, 44). This panel discusses the complexity of human fragility and considers the various ways in which the Church can accompany individuals and families in light of Amoris Laetitia.
H. E. Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, Archbishop of Perugia-Citta della Pieve, President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference.
Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti was born in Popolano, Florence in 1942 and ordained priest in 1966. He worked in parish and in the minor seminary and in 1979 was appointed rector of the Major Seminary. In 1992 he was made Vicar General of the Archdiocese. In 1994, Saint Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of Massa Marittima-Piombino. In 1998, he was transferred to the diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro, and in 2009 appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve. In the same year he was elected vice-president of the Italian Episcopal Conference for Central Italy, and in 2012 president of the Umbrian Episcopal Conference. In 2014, Pope Francis created him cardinal priest of Santa Cecilia. Cardinal Bassetti is a member of the Congregation for Bishops and the Congregation for Clergy, and a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity. In 2017 he was appointed president of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
