H.E. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.
Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell was born on 2 September 1947 in Dublin, Ireland. He attended the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Spain and then went to Rome to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas and obtained higher degrees in philosophy and theology. He entered the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ in 1966 and was ordained to the priesthood on 24 December 1978. After ordination he served as chaplain to the University of Monterrey in Mexico. In 1984 he was incardinated in Washington Archdiocese and ministered in parishes for 18 years. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Washington in 2001. In March 2007 he was appointed bishop of Dallas. On 15 August 2016 he was appointed Prefect of the new Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. He was created cardinal by Pope Francis at the Ordinary Public Consistory on 19 November 2016.
