UN Peacekeeping Chief General Kristin Lund to keynote Women’s Leadership Symposium at the World Meeting of Families 2018

“Voices of Impact: Women Leaders Shaping Global Change”

to feature women leaders from Twitter, Irish Navy and Silicone Valley

The World Meeting of Families 2018 is delighted to announce that a symposium dedicated to the global impact of women’s leadership will be held on Saturday 25 August as part of its international gathering of families from 21-26 August. ‘Voices of Impact: Women Leaders Shaping Global Change’, will be chaired by Irish broadcaster and entrepreneur Norah Casey and US business executive Susan Ann Davis and will feature a series of dynamic conversations and interviews with women leaders at the RDS, Dublin. This is the first time that a symposium of this type has featured as part of a WMF event.

The symposium themes will include women’s leadership in driving global growth and reducing poverty; peacekeeping; sustainability; entrepreneurship; girls’ education; violence against women; the needs of refugees, the challenges of the homeless and people with special needs. Women change-makers from around the globe will engage in dynamic conversations on unique initiatives and solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. 

The Keynote speaker is Norwegian General Kristin Lund, Jerusalem, the first woman to lead the UN Peacekeeping Forces.  Major General Kristin Lund is Head of Mission and Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO).  She was the first female officer to be promoted to the rank of Major General in the Norwegian Army, before becoming the first female Force Commander in a United Nations peacekeeping operation, while serving in Cyprus.

The Visit of Pope Francis to Ireland for WMOF2018

Pope Francis will make a pastoral visit to Ireland for the 9th World Meeting of Families which is taking place in Dublin from 21 – 26 August.

  • National Opening of World Meeting of Families which will take place simultaneously in the twenty-six dioceses on the island of Ireland on Tuesday 21 August;
  • A three-day Pastoral Congress which will take place in the RDS, Dublin from 22-24 August and will include entail a joyful and reflective programme of workshops, talks and discussions centred on the theme: “The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”.  The Congress will also offer an engaging programme for young people to include faith and fun activities for children;
  • A Festival of Families on Saturday 25 August in Croke Park, which is choreographed as a celebration of family life, will feature almost 2,000 performers and testimonies from families from across the world in the presence of Pope Francis.
  • A visit to Knock Shrine, Ireland’s National Marian Shrine, where he will pray for families and for the World Meeting of Families on Sunday 26 August;
  • The Closing Mass for WMOF2018 which will involve 500,000 pilgrims from Ireland and around the world in the Phoenix Park, Dublin on Sunday 26 August.
