How do I apply to be a volunteer?
To apply to be a Volunteer, you will need to complete an online application form. All volunteers will also be required to provide a photo and complete a Garda Vetting form as part of their application.
Is there a deadline to apply to be a WMOF2018 volunteer?
As we require several thousand volunteers for these series of events and each must complete several steps including training, Garda Vetting and reference checks, we recommend applicants apply as early as possible to begin the process. The deadline to apply as a volunteer is 15th Jan 2018. This is to allow for time to complete Garda vetting, the 3 stages of training, allocation of roles, and all scheduling.
How many days do I need to volunteer?
Volunteers must be available, for at least four consecutive days, between 18th and 29th August 2018. The duration of the WMOF2018 is 21st August until 26th August 2018 but we require volunteers for pre and post event. You must be willing to volunteer for a minimum of four consecutive days.
What must a World Meeting of Families 2018 (WMOF2018) volunteer be?
- Be a resident of the island of Ireland at the time of application.
- Be over 18 years of age as of 1st January 2018; or between the ages of 16 & 18 if volunteering in a group with ratio of at least one adult to ten young people. (There is no upper age limit.)
- Be sensitive and respectful of our Catholic ethos.
- Be fluent in English – all training and management instructions will be in English.
- Be aware that WMOF2018 is unable to provide accommodation for volunteers and is not in a position to reimburse travel costs to events or training.
- Be aware we will supply you with a volunteer uniform that you may keep as a souvenir.
- Be aware you will be given a lunch pack during your volunteering shifts.
- Must apply for Garda vetting as part of the application process in line with the procedure laid down.
- Be available to volunteer for a minimum of four (4) consecutive days between 18th and 29th August 2018. (Shifts will last up to 8 hours and you will be given adequate rest time).
- Be available for three (3) mandatory training sessions, starting before the end of 2017. The training sessions will be on Saturdays and will last 3 to 5 hours. They will cover Induction, Job and Venue Specific Training. Advance notice will be given of dates.
- Be able to provide the names and contact details (i.e. address, email, telephone number) for two referees in a position to give a character reference. These referees could be a friend, family member, employer, Parish Priest, landlord etc.
- Be able to provide the name and contact details (i.e. address, email, telephone number) for a Next of Kin in the event of any emergency arising when the volunteer is on duty with WMOF2018.
Please note our registration is handled online. If you do not have access to email or a computer, please ask family members or friends for access to their computer and for assistance with the volunteer application process. Alternatively, you can access a computer and support in your local citizens information office or local library.
Be aware that being a volunteer does not mean you will get to participate in the WMOF2018 programme for days you are not scheduled to volunteer. You can register separately for attendance through the programme.
What information will I need to provide to start the Garda Vetting process?
After you have completed your online application form you will need to complete an online Garda Vetting form (eVetting). The first part of the Garda Vetting procedure we will require photographic identification (i.e. A valid Passport or Drivers License) and also a recent utility bill or document that proves your address. Instructions regarding the Garda Vetting procedure will be sent to you after you have applied as a volunteer. You will need to come to our offices in Dublin to complete the Garda Vetting in person. WMOF2018 volunteers will be assigned from a wide variety of roles to match their skills and experience. Tasks may include supporting information and welcome centres, transport hubs and event services at the major WMOF2018 venues. Most volunteer roles will be WMOF2018-time specific i.e. 21st August 2018- 26th August 2017. However, we also have opportunities to volunteer pre and post WMOF2018.
Why is Garda Vetting done online?
Garda vetting is now done online as it has a quicker turnaround time for WMOF2018 and volunteer applying. eVetting removes days from the system lost to postage and data entry.
An applying volunteer will be able to trace the progress of their own application, removing the need for them to contact WMOf2018 with a query regarding their application status.
Why are volunteers to be Garda Vetted by WMOF2018?
All volunteers are to Garda Vetted according to WMOF2018 Child protection and Safe Guarding polices.
Are the roles or working Areas for Volunteering?
We have several working teams in WMOF2018 that will require volunteers to assist them in a variety of volunteer roles. Each team needs a different number of volunteers. The working teams are:
- Event Services Team will assist with the smooth running of a specific area. This will be the largest team and will include activities such as ushers and stewards.
- Hospitality/Meet and Greet Services Team will welcome everyone to the WMOF2018 and will ensure that pilgrims have the information they need at hand.
- Information Services Team will assist in the delivery of information to pilgrims and WMOF2018 functional areas.
- Logistical Services Team will facilitate the smooth running of the WMOF2018 venues.
- Media Services Team will generate positive coverage of the WMOF2018 and bring the excitement to the rest of the world. The team will also produce timely, accurate and engaging content for the website.
- Medical Services Team will be responsible for providing medical care to all pilgrims involved in the WMOF2018. Medical staff will be on hand to deliver medical support or treatment.
- Pastoral and Liturgical Services Team will assist with the planning, implementation and administration of the pastoral and liturgical parts of the WMOF2018.
- Translation Services Team (Written and Spoken) will assist with translations for various texts or help facilitate pilgrims from different language groups.
- Transportation Team will ensure pilgrims and guests get to where they need to be, safely and on time. Drivers must be over 21 and have a full clean Irish driver’s licence. Drivers must be five years free of any drink/drug driving offences.
- Volunteer Services Team will assist with the planning and administration for several thousand Volunteers that will make the WMOF2018 happen.
If you are not offered a role in your preferred team do not be too disappointed, we promise you’ll have a fantastic time whichever volunteer team you are in! It is important to remember that being a volunteer means you may not get to partake in the WMOF2018 programme itself, because you may be involved in operational activities, which though essential to the event, are not always at the heart of the action.
Can I be assured of my preferred role or team?
On the application form, please indicate the team that you would like to volunteer to assist. We will do our best to facilitate you but we cannot guarantee your preference.
What is the typical volunteer shift?
Shifts will typically last up to eight hours, including breaks. Each volunteer will receive one lunch pack per day they volunteer. You will receive your volunteer duties and work schedule by email in advance of the WMOF2018.
How likely am I to get the location/time that I request?
We cannot promise that you will get the times and positions you prefer. Every role is important in supporting the World Meeting of Families 2018.
Can I work the same shifts as my friends?
We recommend choosing the same 4 consecutive days as your friends; however, we cannot guarantee that you will be volunteering in the same events, or shifts, or area as your friends.
Will WMOF2018 pay my transport and accommodation costs?
WMOF2018 are unable to provide accommodation for volunteers and will not be in a position to reimburse travel costs to events or training.
Will I get paid to be a WMOF2018 volunteer?
Volunteer work by definition is unpaid. Volunteering benefits the community and is undertaken freely and by choice, without concern for financial gain. Volunteering is a way in which people can participate in the activities of their community. It is also a vehicle for individuals or groups to address human, environmental and social needs. Volunteering with WMOF2018 will be a fun and memorable occasion!
Is there a volunteer uniform?
All volunteers will receive a uniform. This uniform must be worn at all times when rostered to work. A few days before 21st August 2018, you will collect your uniform and your official accreditation badge. You can also keep your uniform as a souvenir!

I am a person with a disability. Can I volunteer alongside my support worker/personal assistant?
We are committed to ensuring that everybody has equal access at the WMOF2018. This means that if you require an adjustment to carry out your WMOF2018 Volunteer role as a result of your disability, we will make every attempt to provide this. Should you require a support worker or personal assistant they must also register as a volunteer and attend the training provided.
I live in Dublin and would like to host pilgrims in my home. What do I do?
We are currently developing our home stay programme. If you are interested in hosting pilgrims or a family in your home, please contact us here firstname.lastname@example.org with “Host a Family” in the subject line.
As a volunteer, will I be able to attend any of the events during the World Meeting of Families?
We need our volunteers to be focused on their assignments during their volunteer shifts. If you wish to attend any event at WMOF2018, you will be required to register as a participant. If you are a registered volunteer, you will not be able to attend a WMOF2018 session if you have a volunteer shift at that time. If you are assigned to an event during WMOF2018 it will require your complete attention.
How many languages do I need to speak to be a volunteer?
Your ability to speak multiple languages is helpful, but not required. English is the only language requirement as all training and management will be given in English.
How will I get to my volunteer venue?
You will need to provide your own transportation to the venue you are volunteering at. We strongly suggest that you use public transport, car pool or walk where possible as parking will be limited.
Why do I have to give you my mobile phone number?
We may contact you with relevant information to your mobile phone before and during events. If you do not have a mobile phone, your Volunteer Team Leader will relay instructions to you. We may also require it in case of an emergency, and to communicate any last minute cancellations or changes.
Can I volunteer now?
